Can you send me any proof that addiction is the cause of brain chemicals being out of balance. I have researched and all I can find is theories. Can you actually test brain chemical levels, if so how?? I am interested, I just don;t buy into it, but I also know 12 step doesn;t work very well either, so I am open.
Josh
Great question I’m glad you asked. The best way to see these studies is to google “Neurotransmitter pruning due to drug use” http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=neurotransmitter+pruning+study&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=#hl=en&expIds=17259,27846,27894&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=neurotransmitter+pruning+due+to+drug+use&cp=40&qe=bmV1cm90cmFuc21pdHRlciBwcnVuaW5nIGR1ZSB0 or just “neurotransmitter pruning”.
I also see it as tolerance. For example an alcoholic can’t get the same buzz by drinking the same amount. They always have to drink more and more over time to get the same effect because some neurotransmitters have been pruned or cut away. The same holds true for other drug use. Cocaine and Meth addicts have to keep using more and more for the same effect. Sometimes they reach the place where the drug doesn’t have much of an effect anymore and they keep using to avoid withdrawal.
I also believe some alcoholics and addicts are born with brain chemical deficiencies and that these deficiencies will determine what a person’s drug of choice will be. For example: Dopamine deficient people will love Cocaine, Meth, and Alcohol. Gaba deficient people will love Benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax. Endorphin deficient people will love pain pills and/or heroin etc.
Yes you can actually test brain chemical levels. The Neuroscience supplement company tests Neurotransmitter levels in blood and urine to help determine what supplements would be helpful to one of their clients. It is a helpful test but it does not give an accurate picture of what is REALLY going on in the brain. Just because a client may have a “normal” level of serotonin in their blood or urine does not ensure that levels in the brain are normal because serotonin doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier very well. The only way to test neurotransmitter levels in the brain is to test spinal fluid… a risky proposition and not something we are willing to do to a patient. Our IV formula provides Amino Acids that address: Dopamine, Serotonin, GABA, and Endorphin. That covers most all addictive substances… No need to test for anything. By addressing all these Neurotransmitters we ensure a patient they feel: focus, energy, concentration, relaxation, sleep etc. or balanced.
I hope this has answered your questions. I appreciate your participation. Please stay involved here at the Mind and Body Works blog.
